Book review by Ted Felix
It appears that I started reading this book when it came out in 1995 and gave up. After having finished it, I can see why I might have stopped. Most of what is in this book is obvious. The editors admit this in the introduction. Good patterns are obvious to those with experience. So this book should be great for beginners, right? I don't think so. The patterns are outdated, random (it's a collection of papers after all), and at times misguided. There are far better software development books out there (e.g. Larman). There are also far better collections of papers like Yourdon 1979. In its day, this book may have been a good read, but now it is merely a curiosity. It belongs in research libraries where one might want to track down a citation and read the original article.
There are 5 volumes in this series. After the first, I'm in no hurry to check out the rest.
