Software Architecture in Practice, Second Edition
Len Bass, et al. (2003)

Book review by Ted Felix

A must-read for anyone serious about software engineering and building large software applications. While its goal isn't to offer specific architecture advice (tactics as the book refers to them), it still succeeds in making you think more carefully about how you approach software architecture. The numerous case studies do bring to light many architectural tactics that may be of interest. Variations on the Presentation/Abstraction/Control architecture pattern kept popping up throughout, validating my suspicion that this is an important technique for organizing large software projects.

I recommend reading Larman's Applying UML and Patterns before reading this book. Larman's book is more practical and provides a foundation that helps understand the material covered in Software Architecture in Practice.

Read from 6/3/2005 to 8/5/2005.
