Virus Scanners

As time goes by, virus scanners are becoming a subscription service. My favorite virus scanner was f-prot, however, their free DOS version doesn't work in Windows NT. How convenient for them! This forces their customers to buy their Windows version. Well, the DOS version still works fine on older Windows 9x machines.

If you want a free virus scan of your Windows NT/2000/XP machine these days (2004), you'll have to go for one of the online scanners that install themselves as an ActiveX control through your browser. Here are the ones I've noticed:

Housecall by Trend Micro - I've tried this. It appears very thorough as it took forever scanning through the .jar files in Encyclopedia Britannica. However, when I tried doing some browsing with its parent window, it crashed. Be careful.

McAfee has a scanner called "FreeScan". Haven't tried it yet.

Microsoft Windows

ShellExe - Lets you launch a web page when a CD is inserted in Windows.

Colorado Memory Systems
I have a Jumbo 250 tape drive. DC2120 is TOO SLOW!

EasyPhoto Reader. Not a bad little scanner. Average quality, and the drivers work well. I also have a TotalScan. This is a very nice scanner. Make sure you set up your BIOS for an EPP parallel port mode (NO ECP!), or scans will take a long time.
Turtle Beach
I want the Pinnacle Project Studio card.
US Robotics
Just got a USR 33.6/28.8 to avoid using Mwave on the Freetech. Unfortunately, the ROM needs to be upgraded. Had to pull a fast one at CompUSA to get a proper replacement.

Trivia

Boy, these links take me back. There was a time when you could get a UNIX shell account to access the Internet. These days no one has any idea what that means. Back then, a PPP account cost more than a shell account, so there was software to let you trick your cheaper shell account into acting like the more expensive PPP account. These days (2000), PPP accounts are standard and affordable. They also usually come with a UNIX shell account, though most users of the 'Net haven't a clue what a "UNIX" is.

TIA
A SLIP emulator that you can run from a shell account. I was thinking about trying it, or something similar, one of these years. It was discontinued in July of 1996.
SLiRP
A free SLIP/PPP emulator.
